lyrics

i saw the sunset outside of santa claus, indiana from the interstate
and watched it come up through the frosted-up window of my room down at the junction city super 8
it wasn't the best time to drive across kansas
all the sunflowers were already dead
and the endless brown brightness of middle america
was putting weird thoughts in my head

and it's gas station coffee and roadkill coyote
and stars all the way to the ground
i pulled the wheel of fortune this morning
it means what goes up must come down

under the turbines in east colorado
where i might as well be on the surface of the moon
in between dead spots and radio preachers if i'm lucky
i can pick up on a song or two
the antenna's broken, cassette player's struggling
sometimes there is truly only so much we can do
so i write you a postcard with love from the walmart
in the white light of the auto center waiting room

and it's gas station coffee and roadkill coyote
and stars all the way to the ground
i pulled the wheel of fortune this morning
it means what goes up must come down

i never knew that it wasn't a metaphor
the highway does actually roll on forever
there's dust in the creek beds and ghosts in the switchbacks
of haunted old canyons with infinite train tracks
but i had a vision of us at The Starlight
cutting a hole in that big texas midnight

and it's gas station coffee and roadkill coyote
and stars all the way to the ground
i pulled the wheel of fortune this morning
it means it can all turn around
